Compassion is a special quality that makes you feel deeply for another person. It’s that sense of understanding, empathy and kindness toward someone who is going through a difficult time. Think about how you feel when you see someone in pain or suffering; do you want to help them? Do you have the capacity to extend your caring to another human being as though they were one of your family members? If so, you’re demonstrating empathy. These are just some of the qualities that compassion helps us develop. The capacity to extend our caring can be developed and strengthened through practice. Whether we’re aware of it or not, we often act out of compassion automatically without stopping to think about it. It is a natural response that arises from within in order to meet our own needs as well as those of others. Having compassion for ourselves and others helps us maintain a balanced perspective and outlook on life.
When we lack compassion for ourselves or others, it’s usually a sign that something else is off kilter inside us—and we need to look deeper at what might be affecting us in negative ways before we can repair whatever has been broken inside us.
